February 2025

U.S. Short Selling

Information

The SEC has postponed the deadline for institutional investment managers to file Form SHO for 13f-2 short position reporting. The requirement, originally due by February 14, 2025 (for January 2025 data), is now delayed by a year, with the first report due on February 17, 2026 (for January 2026 data). This temporary exemption, announced yesterday, aims to give filers more time for necessary technical updates and allow market participants to resolve any operational or compliance questions with the SEC.

Our Thoughts

While the delay allows more time for investment managers to prepare for filing, it may be inevitable that systems and processes would have to be implemented to manage the data required for processing.
